| Nursing Home vs Assisted Living |
|
Dear Old Wise One, My mom is failing in health and I am very confused on what is the difference between a nursing home and assisted living. Can you help? -Very confused but not from Alzheimer's Dear Very Confused, Don't fret, many individuals need clarification on this issue. Every state is slightly different, but in New Mexico here are the basics: Nursing Homes are licensed by Department of Health to provide medical care. They are staffed by licensed professionals i.e.; physicians, nurses, CNAs etc. Currently, most individuals reside in nursing homes for rehabilitation (short stays), for recovery from major surgery or physical decline due to falls or disease, and long term stays due to deteriorating conditions that are complicated and need daily medical oversight. Assisted Living is based on a social model program and does not provide medical services. Department of Health licenses assisted living programs as adult residential care facilities. They are usually staffed by non-medical homemakes and personal care attendants. They can help with assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) and can assist with medications with state-approved training. Both programs are usually comprehensive in delivering services including meals, activities and other supportive programs. You can find out more through ALSO (Assisted Living Services Organization) alsonm.org and New Mexico Health Care Association: nmhca.org. Remember to always visit every program that you are considering for your family or friend and insist on seeing their license and program narrative or description of services. -Old Wise One |
